20 CENT PIECES
Guys, I just got these back from ANACS. Please comment on the grades and "DETAILS." I agree with the grades only. I will take pix with my scope, these scans are terrible.

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
I am going to have to wait on the better images. I can't make out much from these scans.
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
The scratch is on the obverse of a VG8 coin. It is hair thin to the left of her head , not obvious , I could see if it was graded higher.???

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Since it goes across the field then it shows up, but it's doesn't look that obvious to me. Of course I am basing this on images and might change my mind if I saw the coin in hand. The coin looks fine otherwise and a resubmit might get a different grade. Who knows?

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
:agree: , this 'looks' like,....from these pics....what's called a 'nail mark'.Daniel wrote:Since it goes across the field then it shows up, but it's doesn't look that obvious to me. nail mark = lightly drag you fingernail, BACKWARDS (like your flicking something), over the surface, leaving the original surface buildup bare in that so called "scratch" area. you need to look real close to see if that mark actually is 'into, or disturbed' the uppermost metallic surface of the coin. as if someone was trying to flick off a 'fluffy' that showed up when they went to picture it...?
remember, they are zipp'n through coins.....sometimes without even using any type of loupe.......& your 'grader?' just saw it as a scratch.....
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Here is the f-15 coin they say was cleaned. The surfaces are gray/black with nothing odd around the devices.

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Just curious what causes the lighter "halo" effect around the head, her right shoulder, and around stars @ 9 & 10:00.dipper13 wrote:Here is the f-15 coin they say was cleaned. The surfaces are gray/black with nothing odd around the devices.
Could that be what "they" saw?
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
There is also a lighter line kind of across the date. I thought it was just handling that caused this. One of the eagle wings also has a light spot, but I never saw a coin that was cleaned here and there for no apparent reason. The places that should be obvious( around the stars) are untouched.

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
If a coin is dipped in a chemical then it doesn't always leave a halo effect around the devices, that's usually caused when a person uses an abrasive on the coin and doesn't get close enough to the stars.
Usually when a coin's surface is altered by a dipping substance and if it's properly removed or handled afterward then the coin can get a splotchy or uneven toning effect. I do see how this coin could be dipped and retoned, but nothing harsh and shouldn't hurt the value much.

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
The f15 looks ok as Liberty is not complete on this coin. The vg8 coin could have been a bit higher to vg10 I think.Would have to have coin in hand to see the "scratch" though. Also could be an old cleaning and has retoned.I have a gold coin (ANACS AU50 1851o 2 1/2 $ with the tougher 4 digit rpm) where I don't see any evidence of a cleaning(fine lines, discolorations, ect) and it received a cleaning tag too.I also have the 2 1/2 $ 1852o with some evidence of a very light cleaning that received au55 details cleaned. I expected the cleanong tag on the 52 but not the 51.They were sent in together.
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
These guys are details crazy. I am sending the f-15 to NGC, they are more even handed, ANACs thrives on "details." Actually, I should send them both after I break them out.
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Well guys, I was right! I just got my 2 20 cent pieces back from NGC. Neither one got a details grade! Don't believe everything ANACS does is right. They are DETAILS CRAZY>

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Good, I was on the fence on these coins because I only had the images to go by. I am glad they came back problem free and that makes a difference in their value.
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Looks like I was correct on my grade guesses.Glad the got a correct grade.Makes me think of all the coins I got back from anacs as details/cleaned of how accurate they really are??????
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Oh yes, I have learned the hard way to crack them out. Remember, the three main graders do not like each other,so take no chances on prejudices ! This way you start on an even playing field. If you ever read M. Fahey in coin world he often says, " one of the major grading
companies calls this coin a vg 8, but I disagree!" = Translation, PCGS or NGC made a mistake. He works for ANACS.

Re: 20 CENT PIECES
I thought you did, just wanted to make sure.Makes sense not to give them a head start on what someone else thinks.I have an 1875cc that anacs graded g6 and does look to be fairly accurate.Possibly could have made vg8 as the rims are stronger than a g6 coin.I'm on the laptop now and I'll post pics a little later when I get on the main computer.
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
I have collected coins a long time. Most of the 20 cent pieces I ran into were P-1, F-2 or AG-3. People wanted $40 or $50 for the beat ones years ago. I once saw a mint state piece! These two are the most common, 1875 S. I believe that since these coins lasted five years plus a couple proof only years, they are very rare. They are working on 150 years old! The book says the retail in g-4 is $100 for 1875 S. Everything else is very pricey. The fact is they are all worth more than they show. I sent these in to NGC because I knew I had good pieces. I wasted $20 plus shipping at ANACS. Like you cableman, I have a lot of details ANACS slabs. There are others that I suspect were OK. I sent another pair to PCGS through a friend and they came back normal. They were Morgans, one for grade, one for details. Both came back as I hoped. How many more do we have that are really OK? That is the question we should ask ourselves. Dan
Re: 20 CENT PIECES
Hi Dan,These were only issued 2 years for circulation,1875 from the p,s and cc mints and 1876 only p and cc.I agree a very undervalued coin, similar to the $2 1/2 gold thread Dan was talking about a short while ago.All 4 years have proof issues. Here's the breakdown on mintages:
Year Mint mark Proofs Circulation strikes
1875 2,790 36,910
1875 CC 133,290
1875 S 12 1,155,000
1876 1,260 14,640
1876 CC 10,000
1877 510
1878 600
Here are the pics of the cc coin I mentioned.I have another 1875cc in a vg8 but has some graffiti on the obverse and a couple 1875s coins at f12,possible f15 and vg8.
