Please explain to me what the N-33 on a 1851 large cent. Its graded AU 58 BN? (Graded by NGC)

The 'N-33' you see for that coin...is a "Nucomb" #. If you look around at other large cent listings, you will find these numbers,...... they are to identify that exact die pair that struck that exact coin.

Newcomb was a premier name in identifying the different die varieties and die marriages of Large Cents, so he used an N followed by a number to classify the different varieties. I think it's the 1851/81 inverted over date which is rare.
