Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
I have a few 'silver' dollars that I KNOW are counterfeit. I received them from another antique dealer who was ripped off buying them from an unscrupulous cheat.
These coins test positive for silver with an acid test... they are actually silver plated.
A magnet will NOT attach itself as the coins are nickel.
I have shown them to well over 50 collectors and dealers and all were ready to purchase as original, until I showed them they were fakes.
The weight is the SAME as a silver dollar. I have common and rare dates. Has anyone else encountered these master fakes?

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
Photos of these master counterfeits would be great. And, of course, welcome.
Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
They weigh plus or minus 26.9g. How can I down load jpg?

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
may i ask a few questions plz?
from your post info.....can i assume that:
1. you did an 'acid test', by rubbing the edge/rim of the coin on the stone, & used 'nitric acid'(?) to test the metal content?
.....& what color(s) did you get??....& was there any "reaction" of the acid on the block after 20 seconds (fizzing/bubbling)?
2. when you 'weighed' your coins,...you turned on the scale, waited until it read 'zero', then placed the coin on the scale,....& used that # for the weight ??
D, I FIGURED OUT THE 'SAVED DRAFT' THINGY....NEVERMIND....DAAAAAA

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
1) acid test on stone, rubbing edge, yes. I wiped off after about 8 seconds. I deal in many antiques and test all "potential" gold, silver and platinum.
2) Yes, same procedure for all gold and silver.

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
& a magnet has no attraction to these coins...?
:eureka:
as nickel is a "ferromagnetic" metal...

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
Most metals aren't magnetic with the exception of iron, nickel, cobalt, gadolinium, neodymium and samarium.
(Funny, I work with all of these.)
Anyway, posting pictures is fairly easy.
Just use the Full Editor when writing your reply.
Then, scroll down under the reply and you will see an "attachment" tab for entering photos.
Here's a test to tell all without subjecting a coin to acid:
Coin Specific Gravity
Specific gravity determines how much water is displaced by the mass of the coin. Only an authentic Morgan Silver dollar will have a specific gravity of 10.340.

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
m, remember SG is a 'volume' measurement, as 'displacement'.....
:eureka:
so, if i calculate only by the "numbers".....using nickel @ 8800 Kg/m3, & silver @ 10,049 Kg/m3.....then a 'nickel coin' of this size would be:
22.42364g

Re: Counterfeit Silver Dollars Passing the Test
That's true if it is the exact size of a Morgan. If the counterfeiter mixed lead and tin to get the weight right, then the volume would only need to be slightly off, the weight would be right, it would not be magnetic, but the specific gravity would still be wrong.
