Help finding Mahaiwe Bank (#1203) $20 signed by Alman Culver

#1 Unread post by PetesPockets55 »

Newbie here with a question about the Mahaiwe Bank (Charter #1203) of Great Barrington Mass.
My elderly folks had a fire (everyone was OK) in Jan. 2013 that destroyed a $20 bill (Ca. 1920?) that was signed by a great grand parent, Almand(?) Culver. I am trying to help them locate another, similar one. I do not have high hopes but would greatly appreciate any assistance in pointing me in the right direction. I have done the regular Google search and was able to come up with some basic information on the bank , but no specifics about locating anything. It is amazing the help and commitment this community provides. Thank you in advance for any assistance. Not sure how this is supposed to work but here goes, I'm opening my eyes wide and jumping in!! lol: !

These notes are not easy to find and I suggest signing up for an account at Heritage Currency Auctions and putting it in your wish list, so if one comes up for auction then you will get an email.

Can you give more info on the note you seek, since there's different types likes National Bank Notes and Federal Reserve.

thanks Daniel (more punctuation problems with keyboard< sorry) I did a search of Heritage which came back with some but they were civil war era> I never saw the bill in question but it was not a federal reserve note> I"m not real familiar with currency but I believe it was a regional bank note where the bank president would sign along with another bank official> one of the officials was my dad"s grandfather so there is a sentimental value mostly> The Mahaiwe bank was in Great Barrington Mass>

It sounds like a National Bank Note and these are rare, and it's not know how many still exist from all the banks that issued them. I have handled notes like this that I could only find one example sold in the past few years, so this isn't going to be an easy find.

Hum, thanks mikev, I got confused his question. If this is what you're looking for petes... then they can be found easily enough. I thought you're were talking about a National Currency Charter Note.

Thanks Dan and MikeV for all for the help. I found a $10 note at Heritage Auctions that sold years ago.
Here is the link if you want to check it out- (hope it works)

Ancestors signature is lower left of portrait. They sure are hard to locate. The older ones (1800's) seem to be the most popular.

:winnah: widegrin A great big thank you goes to mikev50 for pointing me towards this 10$ banknote. I won the auction today in time for a very nice surprise for my Dad, (he had a $20 note burn up in a fire this past Jan.) just in time for Christmas. Not really into collecting currency, sentimental reasons this time as one of the signors was his Grandfather. Thanks to all with their thoughts and suggestions.
