Another Brown Spot Question

#1 Unread post by 2centsal »

This is in addition to my last Post . While I was looking at the Error Note I wanted to make sure it had Brown spots on the Outside of the Note because with other Notes I've noticed that under direct light that I can see Brown Spots within the Paper . Most of them are on my older Notes ( 1928 -1977 )but even on some Newer Notes I seen these spots in the paper . How is this created and is it something a Buyer looks at ? I'm assuming it has to due with the making of the Paper but I don't know why some Notes have these and some not . Take a look at your Currency and you'll see what I mean .
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks .

So far I've come up empty handed on what the brown spots are " IN " the paper . I looked all over the internet and couldn't find anything about this . Maybe it's Interior " Foxing" like you see on the outside of old books or something to due to the making of the Paper . Then again, it's supposed to go through some kind of "bleaching " before the Paper is ready to be Printed so I don't know . I'll just keep hoping someone can figure it out . If you have Old Currency( anything between 1934 - present), Look at it with the light directly behind it and let me know if you see what I mean.

Foxing is probably the term to apply as it is an attack on the fibers and could be anywhere on the note, even internal.

Got a high power scope? Look at one of the spots closely and make sure it is not tiny creatures eating your note. Otherwise, it is probably an acid reaction to metals in the fiber. Most paper is naturally acidic and will attack itself if subjected to humidity.

Notes made since 1890 are less prone, but not immune to this effect.
