NOT A CONTEST

10 points to the first person who can tell us what this, where it was spent and why it was made.
First official acquisition for my son's folding money collection. He likes Lincoln.

This $5 Silver Certificate was made in America especially for servicemen serving in North Africa. (Blue serial number, yellow seal) Designed this way such that if a large contingent was captured, the money would help identify who and location of the men captured. As well, the US could easily devalue the special notes to make them worthless to the enemy.

(My kind of collectible... interesting history behind the item.)

WWII?
The date on it is 1924 (I think).
Now that I think about it they can print any date they want, huh? :l

Pete,

It's a Series 1934a. They were printed in about 1941. Remember, notes aren't dated each year like coins so the same series is used for multiple years.

At least some things are consistent!
Nice find on the bill. Was it in your change?

Pete,

I bought it in one of the Facebook auctions for cheap. Neither I nor the seller knew what it was till after the sale so it was sorta an accidental find.

:greatfind:

Of course, the find came after the purchase. Those are the ones I really like.

Serial numbers for N Africa notes start at K34188001A. Does that make this a somewhat early serial, maybe?
