1919 Double Die Obverse Buffalo Nickel

#1 Unread post by mark.tumblin »

I purchased this 1919 Buffalo Nickels about 15 years ago and thought it was a Double Died Obverse. Since it was well worn I just put it away and forgot about it until last week. My question is is it worth sending in to be attributed and graded or should I just sell it on Ebay. I have attached a few pictures. Your comments would be appreciated.

It is machine doubling and not a doubled die, you can see the flatness of the secondary. A doubled die die does not have a shelf like flatness.

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here.
While it is an interesting coin and will certainly grab a persons attention, it is only MD (Machine or Mechanical Doubling).
It holds some value as an educational specimen and learning tool but this non-valuable doubling was created when the coin was produced not when the die was produced.

On CONECA then you can ID die markers, if it's not a match then it's not the variety or it's a new variety, or no variety at all.

I am seeing a dig difference in your coin and the CONECA example and flatness or shelf-like on the secondary.

i agree here, NOT a "doubled die",
the example of mikes ddo on the V.V. SITE is different than yours.

....... :eureka: , remember, these 'very fine / minor' doublings are difficult to distinguish from
the "real die doubling".
that's why is best to ask first,... we have been at this a loooong time (me, since 1970)
