1906 Indian Head

#1 Unread post by El32 »

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a silver in color Indian head. It weighs 3.11 grams and is somewhat magnetic. It will fall off a magnet under its own weigh.

Why would it be magnetized?

I was wondering if it could been on the wrong planchet or foreign planchet. I’m starting to believe it is a fake, but it’s only been 4 days investigating it. So not willing to throw the towel in yet.

Why magnetic? Most likely plated (also can explain a silver look). Hard to tell from the pics.

If yours is plated, the pics also make it look like yours was circulated after plating and lost some of it. Plating was done on a not-so-rare basis in the past to make jewelry.

Plating cause some magnetism, could have been plated in the past but it doesn't look nor weigh a silver planchet weight.

Thank you all for advice and thoughts. I believe it may be plated, but still trying to make sure. Probably wasted effort, but still fun researching.

If you are unaware, magnets are sometimes rated as "lb."
Occasionally, if someone uses a heavy duty magnet to test their coins, they will encounter exactly what you have.

I use a 4 lb. magnet...

The magnet I have use is also the magnet from my quick holster for my gun. I have one sat beside my bed to lay my gun on at night. So I’m unsure of any markings on it.
