1759 Pillar Dollar

#1 Unread post by dipper13 »

Guys, look at what I got buying a guys colonials. I got this pillar dollar and some chopped ones that were used for colonial commerce. This one has a beautiful patina, weighs 26.7 grams, and passed the magnet test. I thought it looked too good when I got it, but could not find any info about the date being a counterfeit. The coin looks like it was pressed slightly off center( Look at the reeding on edge.) Any idea about condition?

Wow. :greatfind: Nice looking coin for being so old. Lots of fine detail. Rim details are sharp with minor nicks and dings. Looking like AU at least to me.

Nice coin and looks authentic to me. I would say EF45 anyway. It seems many of these are a bit off center.

Message: Fantastico! I couldn't begin to comment on authenticity but the general opinion sounds positive. I'd love to have one in my collection -- always admired the type!

Got it back from NGC. The coin is genuine as I suspected, but I knew something was not right. They gave it a details grade, "artificially toned." The patina was too beautiful, but I am still pleased that it was real and very well preserved. I am pleased with it, I did not get soaked for the overall purchase. The chopped ones(2) are cool, they circulated in the colonies. They are both at least 60% whole.
