1968-1971 Britain’s First Decimal Coins

#1 Unread post by Brian Hagler »

I have this set i bought a couple months ago; it probably was in this folder for at least 30 years. The blue cover has transferred to all the coins on the faces side. I’ve never personally cleaned a coin....it there a way to get this off??

Brian , I'm sorry for what happened . I found a short Utube video on removing Ink . You may want to watch it . In the Video he uses regular water . I recommend Distilled water . I would try on a junk coin first to get the hang of it .

1. Sal- removing ink/permanent marker is much simpler than all that rubbing etc. Just put the coin in acetone for a few seconds and the permanent marker vanishes.
2. Try using acetone. The green stuff reminds me of what a coin stored in a holder with PVC plastic looks like. Acetone gets rid of it. Acetone cannot chemically or physically alter the metal so this is not considered "cleaning" a coin since the metal is not removed/changed/etc.

BTW - Make sure the bottle says PURE acetone. Walmart - beauty department in a 2.00 bottle sold as a fingernail polish removed. Do not use any fingernail polish remover with perfumes or colorant added - just pure acetone. A larger can of it is in the paint department. I put my coins n a glass container with a lid to keep the acetone from evaporating quickly. You cannot leave them in too long - just don't eave them in until the acetone all evaporates as it then would deposit the gunk back onto the coin in a harder form to remove.
