Roman Republic Denarius authenticity check

#1 Unread post by RomanGreekCoins » Sun Jul 14, 2019 2:19 pm

I am curious about this coin i have
16- 17mm

3.96 grams

i bought this Roman republic anonymous coin last year

When i had it in my hand it looked authentic to me

but i want to confirm because the pouch worries me now and i am curious- are those casting lines on the side?

the same type pouch with black and red pen lettering i bid on a similar roman coin on ebay just recently

this ebay seller items all had private bidders( possible for shill bidding to raise the price) i was recently told that all of the coins in this seller below are fakes. so i am worried about the coin i bought last year now.

this is the current seller in question

https://www.ebay.com/usr/outofeurope?_t ... 7675.l2559

this is the current coin that worried me from the bidding.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ROMAN-REPUPUBL ... 3919949902

ty for any help you could give me

These are three examples I am looking at for consistency in how the devices were engraved.
Biggest thing that stands out are the number of spokes in the chariot wheel. Yours: 7, these: 6. But, you can see that there are variations to even these three.

The edge does look a bit odd. Can you provide another photo of the edge where I circled below:

As to the seller and the pouch: I agree that whoever made up the label for the pouch is the same person who made your pouch.
Are his coins fake? I don't think so.
His photos have the look of an attempt to sharpen a blurry photo resulting in a grainy look when magnified.
Some of his coins may be repatinated. (Cleaned too far and then toned artificially.)

Edge cracks are very difficult to duplicate by cast or strike.

I think the edge has been smoothed. That crack doesn't appear to go to the top or bottom of the coin.
I'm going to have to go with copy on this one.

do you agree that those private bidders sound a little fishy as well? even if these coins all turn out to be genuine, maybe hes raising the bidding price to get more$$ out of real buyers?

when you say copy do you mean that you believe it is stills silver? does the weight sound okay?

It is on the heavy end.
The three coins I compared with: 3.46g, 3.60g, 3.78g

Is it silver? No way for me to determine that.
