#1 Unread post by RomanGreekCoins »

question about this coin

I notice crescent shaped marks on some coins lately
is this from banks marking the coin?

and why?

also is this speckles environmental or casting?

I have to admit, my first thought was cast coin. But, this coin has a crack running through both sides of the coin and that cannot usually be captured by casting.

So, I am calling this one's pitting to be environmental damage.

Bank marks were used to indicate the coin had been verified to weigh correctly and had not been shaved. (A means of stealing some of the precious metal.)

We call them bank marks, but they were likely made by merchants who traveled from city to city. Common customers could identify the mark as a guarantee.

thanks mhonzell. I noticed the cracks too but the image s on both sides seem kinda light impressions and i thought the speckles were casting.

No casting lines and the crack crosses the edge. (That's good.)

thank you. I noticed some of my coins are thinner on 1 side and thicker on another. Does this proof authenticity? or can this mean it it could be a hammered fake?

Which Pansa is this? Is this the one who defeated Mark Antony at the Battle of Mutina?

or the relative of his who lives 60 years earlier?

Yeah, my bad. I was looking all over the thread (I thought) for the mention of PENSA. Images, replies, comments, etc.
And there it was in the title all along. :dunno
My replies like this help me keep a firm grip on the lower rungs of the novice ladder. lol:
