Gloria Exercitvs ancient Roman bronze coin

#1 Unread post by PetesPockets55 »

Gloria Exercitvs obverse with label
Gloria Exercitvs obverse with label
(I'll try this one again)
This is another bronze from Constantine the Great era- Circa 320-337 ad.
Bronze coin
1.4 grams
16 mm
Obverse-
Laureate Crown bust facing right,
Only a few letters are easily visible around the perimeter- _ _ Y _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Y S R _ _ (Maybe)
(Similar to a Flavius Julius Delmatius coin LINK of the period who is made caesar by his uncle Constantine the Great. He was to govern Thrace and Macedonia after his uncle died. He, a number of relatives and Roman officials were killed by one or all of Constantine's Sons, the three Augusti, Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans, although they denied being a part of it).
Reverse-
Gloria Exercitvs (Glory of the Army) around the perimeter
Two stick figure soldiers, left and right facing a center standard with a circle on it. Spears in outside hands & maybe swords inside hands.
Exergue: S M K D (Greek Delta or A) is the Cyzicus mint (Current day Turkey)
Thanks in advance and for any help determining rarity (probably common since it is bronze), and correcting/adding information.
(My apologies but for some reason the better images don't want to attach to this post)

RIC VII, Cyzicus 132
(Kapu Dagh, Turkey) mint
336 - mid 337 A.D.
Rarity: R2

(I make out the highlighted text.)
Obverse: FL IVL DELMATIVS NOB C
laureate and cuirassed bust right
Reverse:
GLORIA EXERCITVS (glory of the army)
two soldiers standing facing, flanking a standard in center, heads helmeted and confronted, each holds a spear in outer hand and rests inner hand on grounded shield
I see SMKΔ in the exeurge. Meaning it was made in the fourth officina of the Cyzicus mint.

So that link was helpful after all?

Rarity 2 if I remember correctly from my studies today is about 14 estimated examples.
So that is the Greek symbol for Delta after the SMK.
And this would have been minted before he was ummm.... ahh.... "voted off the island", so to speak and sent skyward?

Forvm has a lot of information on ancient coins like Daniel's site does on US coinage, but one cannot always find an example coin you're looking for.

Wildwinds has every imaginable coin, but lousy search funtions and very little on in-depth information.
