EGYPT - 1970-1972 One Pound Silver
The first coin I came across which has me a tad puzzled is this large heavy silver Egyptian Pound, it is labeled by the previous owner. The obverse is what I gather to be El Azhar University and the Gregorian Arabic dates clearly show 1970-1972 on the left side of the reverse. What I can't parse is the Arabic dates do not seem to agree!?
Hoping this enigma will soon be explained by someone here .. thanks in advance .. Zeke

Re: EGYPT - 1970-1972 One Pound Silver
Welcome back.
Were you using the Creounity time converter to calculate the dates?"Creounity Time Machine" link.
I can't/don't read the language on the coin to help you with identifying whether it is a coin, a token or commemorative item? But I come up with different dates (right side of your image) when plugging the characters into the site in the link above, for Lunar Hejira calculations. The dates I come up with (right side) is 1359 (1940) over 1261 (1845) which makes me think it might be a commemorative.
Sorry I couldn't be more decisive with any help.

Re: EGYPT - 1970-1972 One Pound Silver
Thank you for the reply. Quite a bit of help actually, the Time Machine link is quite informative and easy to use. I have a fairly significant number of very old Arabic coins, some gold, and I will thoroughly research their origins.
This coin, or commemorative, was labeled as "Date Error in Arabic" ... but I have seen this on eBay and everywhere with precisely the same dating .. so apparently not an error in the dating .. but an error in interpreting what exactly those dates mean for this piece!
Thanks again .. Zeke

Re: EGYPT - 1970-1972 One Pound Silver
After much looking I am beginning to understand the apparent "error" of the dates on this coin. There were only 100,000 minted I believe, and the melt value today is about $9.75.
OK , the date thing! The mosque was dedicated in 972AD! Add 1000 years .. there you go .. 1972!
BUT ... 972 AD is 361 AH! And there are 1031 Islamic years in 1000 Gregorian years .. so 361 + 1031 = 1390 to 1392 in AH !! what they did here is this! They added 1000 years to the AH dates! The coin was minted with the Arabic dates 1000 Gregorian years after the Arabic dedication!
Confusing ... YOU BET!

Thanks for the followup. That "Creounity Time Machine is very helpful and I learned about it here.
So is it a mosque, a university or both on the coin?

The Great Library of Alexandria (in Egypt) comes to mind whenever I think of institutions of higher learning in the middle east. It must have been quite impressive at it's peak. (It would be neat if you had some coins from this period!)

The left side is a modern date. The right side is based on the Lunar Hejira, which is used in Egypt resulting in 1359/1361 (1970/1972). The Solar Hejira results in different dates and countries such as Iran.
