New batch of Ancient... Rings?

#1 Unread post by mhonzell » Fri May 27, 2016 11:03 am

Just got a new batch of ancient coins from Slovakia and in the midst was this bronze ring. Based on the coins, the ring is from around 300 AD. It bears a crawfish. (I thought maybe a scorpion, but don't see a stinger. And, it seems to have too many legs.) My source finds these by metal detecting in the local hills finding small caches of coins left behind by Romans who either died out, or had buried their treasure before fighting in battle. (A common practice.) The ring makes me think this cache was a local who had buried their treasures out in the backyard so that it wouldn't be taxed, then something happened preventing them from getting it out of the ground.

He then sells them by weight and this just got mixed in.

i am no expert but it looks like a scorpion to me--tail with the stinger at the back and curves to the left--has eight legs--and the two front pinchers--neat find--

I see something like a scorpion as well, but the story and coins are cool.

Awesome bonus! I thought Scorpion as well because of the narrowing tail and what appears to be a point. It reminds me of a story my mother told of when I was a kid of 3-4 and having moved to South Florida from New England. I came to her and told her there was a lobster on the outside of my brothers playpen. She was baffled until she saw the scorpion! hugeeyes Yikes!

Thanks.

It is also interesting to note that most of those coins pictured were a day's wages, each. The batch of coins would have been about a month's pay.
