1802 1/3 Thaler

#1 Unread post by regandon »

This is an NGC MS62 1802 1/3 Thaler. It is a late die state strike. When an MS coin looks to be a lower end AU state coin, it is do to the state of the die. This coin was struck by a die that had struck many blanks. The first tell tail sign is die cracks and soft struck areas within the design do to die deterioration. The lettering is high in some areas and flat and soft in others. On the main design it is sharp with lots of detail and is soft with almost no detail in other areas.

I always thought it was die striking pressure as the cause of weak features that make MS coins look AU, but the worn high points of the die could contribute to this "flatness". It even has a semi-circulated-patina.

You have to think of 16th to very early 19th century minting in Germany and process that was used.

This coin would have been Screw Press. The Roll Press and the Rocker Press were faded out by the 19th century. I know my answer was very general in my first response. I think the article I wrote on the minting process is still within the World Coin forum section.

This is the Austrian ( the Austrian Empire was the Head Of State of the Holy Rome Empire) Roller Press that minted the large thick silver Thalers in late 15th century to the mid 18th. I have also included a photo of a Roller Press Thaler die.
