Colonial Coins Found over the years

#1 Unread post by 2centsal »

Daniel, these are some of my Colonial Coins I found. I know there in rough shape but remember they've been in the ground a long time.

Nice coins, of course they will look a little rough being in the ground but there's some nice details on some of them. I would love to find even one no matter the condition, as long as I can identify type and date.

That's the thing about Metal Detecting. Just finding an old coin and identifying it and getting a date is exciting in itself. It being in Very Nice condition is a plus. When I find a coin like a 1733 King George Copper, I think about several things like how devastating it must have been for the person who lost it, the fact that it was made before so many events that occurred in Colonial America and the fact that it was probably brought over by a Man and his family to start a new life. So you can imagine what it must be like when a person loses say a Silver coin from the 1700's or even the 1800's. It could mean the difference of buying groceries or not ( or Booze widegrin ).
I know this has nothing to do with coins directly but they say a George Washington Button back then cost the amount of a common person's wage equal to 6 months pay ! So, that's why just a few Large Coppers was a big deal. That's why in the late 1800's they had to switch to the small cents. The copper was now worth more than the face value. The funny thing is we are still dealing with that with the penny and why they switched from Silver to Clad . I'm surprised Silver isn't more than it is.
One last thing, as a detectorist , I want to know where all those Gold coins are that history has claimed that were widely circulated because I've met a lot of guys who have never found one.

I think with the gold coins that were widely circulated ended up being hoarded and buried in caches, plus when they became illegal to own in 1933 many people turned them in to the government, much more than people realize today. So they were melted and lost forever.
