Button Finds

#1 Unread post by 2centsal »

Hello everyone ! As a Metal Detectorist for 10 years off and on, I've found hundreds of buttons. Most of the time there's not much on the back than words like Treble Guilt, Superior Quality and other words that are no help in putting an exact date range of when the button was made. Once in awhile though, there will be what's called a " Maker's Mark". Here's a website to help you with these kind of buttons : http://pw1.netcom.com/~jimyce/bm.html

Daniel, Keep in mind that the website is only U.S Buttons. Most of the buttons I find are from England and have no Maker's Mark. I will post my favorite 3 buttons I've found since Detecting in the morning. One is a Benedict & Burnham Co. which now is called " The Waterbury Button Company " which is only about 30 minutes from where I live. See, living in Connrcticut has great advantages. I also live right next to what use to be the largest Powder Mill in America. It no longer exists but was the largest supplier for several Wars, mainly the Civil War. It was called The Powder Mill Co. . It closed due to so many accidents in the early 1900's. I think it was 1905. I have to check my book that I bought on it through my Town. The main location is now a couple Baseball fields an lies in a huge Hollow.

I doubt out this way that I will be finding much from England. We had a lot of skirmishes with Shawnees in the area and a few battles so I should find a Revolutionary War button if I find any at all. I have yet to find an 20th century button.

Interesting. I am should post something I found years ago at Washington, KY which used to be Simon Kenton's Station. It's sterling silver and looks like a ribbon would have been threaded through it. It's was once a part of clothing, I think. It's ornate and it good shape. I don't even know what you would call it.

Well since my health is so variable I haven't Detected much this year, maybe 6 times or so. I use to go every Saturday before I got Lyme Disease. It's been about 2 years since the Doctor came to the conclusion that the Bacteria was eradicated and my symptoms were now Chronic, Hence the term Chronic Lyme Disease or some call it " Post Lyme Syndrome" . Either way I'm in constant pain, get sick easily, have Oxygen level problems, Migraines and hearing problems . I was on Oral and IV Antibiotics for over 2 years. It took a whole year to get a Positive Test plus I found out that my DNA Typing was responsible for a Lyme triggered auto-immune inflammatory illness which I believe is why I'm having constant muscle, joint and now Headaches that reach Migraine level . I'm on Predisone now but I think it's not enough MG. It's helping but not enough.
With all that said, I decided to re-post some of my older finds that others may have not seen or I didn't get enough info. about them like this belt plate I found. .

Man a live that Lyme disease is some nasty stuff. My best friends wife was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease last month. They got her on the antibiotics in short order. Took about 3 weeks for it to be confirmed. She went way down hill for a couple of weeks but now seems to be doing much better now. Hopefully they will get it stopped before it gets a good strong hold in her. I know another lady who has had it for years and nearly died from it several times. She even got Encephalitis and literally lost 2 years of her life. I hope you can get over the post stuff soon. Bad stuff for sure. There are treasures for you to find out there.

Thanks for the good wishes my friend. Well as far as the Lyme Disease, I was destined from the start. Because of my DNA Typing, I was prone to getting what the Doctor described as " Lyme - Triggered Auto-immune Inflammatory illness ". The Disease triggered my Immune System to not only fight off the Bacteria, but it was destroying the good cells as well. It's a Auto-Immune Disease which is when like i said, they Immune system attacks it's own body tissue. It took a whole year in order to get a diagnosis. I went through a support group and got a Board Certified infectious Disease Specialist. She treated me for over 2 years before concluding that she did all that could be done. Now I have Chronic Lymes or some call it " Post Lyme Syndrome".
Getting back to Buttons. I can always tell an English button because I said they usually only have words like Treble guilt, Superior Quality, Extra Rich and sometimes if your lucky it might have the kings crown on it.I noticed over the years that the larger one are Colonial and don't have anything on the back, just designs like the infamous Flower. I'm sick of the Flower Buttons. LOL. Some are Tombacs and some are Pewter and neither have any " Maker's Mark".

You take care. Man that is amazing. If my friends wife gets to a point where she isn't getting better maybe I will mention PLS. My understanding there hasn't been a documented case of Lyme disease in WA from a WA tick. I guess people pick up ticks else where and get infected that way. So there isn't a lot of Dr's who have seen let alone treated this disease.

The buttons are very interesting. We don't have a lot of them around here, maybe a few where the Indians and Calvary got into it. Very cool stuff for sure.
