It fits onto something. I see the hooks that slide into slots. I think. Will you be posting more images?

It looks like part of a brake assembly for an old car or truck( 30s-40s). Many old cars had all metal to stop them.

You guys are doing a good job with guessing, but this item is much older than you guys think. I will give you a few more hints.
*It is hard to tell from the picture, but the things sticking out of the bottom of the new photos are actually square nails. Or whats left of them at least.
For those who don't know they stopped using square nails around 1900. They make for a great dating tool.
If you find square nails at the place you are detecting there is a good chance that something was there before 1900.
*Second hint is that this item was found in a logging camp dating back to the 1840's-1850's.

Maybe a cross cut saw handle part. But hey I like guessing when I don't know anything. :l I was first thinking that is was a blade stop part for a 2012 Stil chain saw, but the nail thing got me all messed up. :w

It looks like something for a horses hoof, and they used horses to pull logs. Although this would be only half of it. I did know the square nail aspect of it. I have found wood with square nails.

I think I got it. That is a banana style ox shoe, which were used in pairs on the animal!

Nice job dipper13! You got it! I'm not sure about the banana style so you may be teaching me something :l but it is definitely an oxen shoe.dipper13 wrote:I think I got it. That is a banana style ox shoe, which were used in pairs on the animal!
Oxen were used primarily to help settlers move west during the early 1800's up til about the 1850's. My understanding is that these are fairly hard to find considering they weren't as popular as horses during those times. I've metal detected other logging camps and never found any so I'm assuming that this logging camp had them because of it's age. Also dipper you pointed out another fact which is that oxen had to have two shoes because of their hooves.
Nice job on this you guys. I hope somebody had fun and learned something at least

Yes. I did learn something, but I had a hunch it was for a hoof, at first. I never thought for a minute about an oxen.

Re: A contest for fun...(More Pics Added)
I forgot to mention. The part that you thought fit into something was actually meant for giving them traction when walking on ice. The loggers would actually spray water down on the trail so that it would freeze into ice. This would make the sleighs ride easier in the winter with a load of logs on them. Horse shoes I've found at logging camps also have these spikes on the bottom.Daniel wrote:Yes. I did learn something, but I had a hunch it was for a hoof, at first.
