It will work.

Sweeping your coil through the snow can take a toll on the detector and holding the coil above the snow will cost you a lot of depth loss.
It will also give you a nagging back ache. Digging in the frozen ground is a pain. Cold temperatures will drain your batteries quickly and breathing can be a chore.
But heck, other than that I don't see a problem. Plus if you are the first one there after the snow, you will easily see where you already hunted. :l

It all depends on how deep the snow before you lose depth and how hard the ground is before it's a chore to dig, but wet ground is best for detecting. It wouldn't hurt to try before the real cold sets in.
