It will work.

Sweeping your coil through the snow can take a toll on the detector and holding the coil above the snow will cost you a lot of depth loss.
It will also give you a nagging back ache. Digging in the frozen ground is a pain. Cold temperatures will drain your batteries quickly and breathing can be a chore.
But heck, other than that I don't see a problem. Plus if you are the first one there after the snow, you will easily see where you already hunted. :l

It all depends on how deep the snow before you lose depth and how hard the ground is before it's a chore to dig, but wet ground is best for detecting. It wouldn't hurt to try before the real cold sets in.

Just a reminder : White's Electronics is no longer . Bought buy Garrett recently in October of 2020 .
As far as Minelab , they have a Novice Detector starting at $199 . I prefer the Vanquish 540 at about $279 and the 540 pro pack at $399 . Anyone else have any Detector advice, I'm your guy . 20 years experience and plenty of junk finds . Here's a coin I dug for inspiration .

I just bought a metal detector on Black Friday...its a cheap one but worth trying out...but since then we have just had a winter storm and the temperatures dropped to remain below freezing and today below zero...so do I need to wait until Spring to use it or is it good to go now...
The detector will work but you have to take into account the depth of the snow and ice. If the snow is 2 inches deep and the target is only 3 inches deep chances are it's a common newer item and if it's deep you'd better have a good shovel and warm gloves that will keep your hands dry or your detecting trip will end quickly. You might also have issues with the display acting wonky if it's too cold.

Wow that is a great find . When I lived in Oregon I just started to get into metal detecting and unfortunately the GOld bug II went away with the furniture to the other. Anyways happy days and I have a new family and a son who I have struggled to try and find something he would like to do either with or without me said he would like to go treasure hunting . I don’t know much about these devices except one with ease of use, discrimination and depth capabilities as well as frequency all make the machine the right choice. I researched a lot about the MINELABS and fortunate for me I did not invest in the gpx 3000 which was a gold nugget shooter. The price matched the model number lol. Anyways I live in an area that I AM ABSOLUTELY SURE IS FULL OF revolutionary war relics. I used to live on the northern tip of what is known as the old ALBANY TRAIL. History fans would be interested to know that this is the trail used by the Green mountain boys to return the cannons from the siege of Quebec where they were “borrowed from and to avoid a battle with the redcoats the Boys made a forced march along the St. Lawrence to Ogdensburg N.Y. And down through the adirondacks right past the house I lived in. These cannons helped win the day in the last battle of the revolution, The battle of Saratoga. Hahaha guess I like history huh? Coins? Relics? Love it and will try to follow this thread to learn more about a good ground and go detector for myself and son.

I have this one - Minelab Excalibur II

What I like:
Excellent iron discrimination
Multi-frequency machine that can also be used for diving
Very accurate tone ID
Submersible to 200 ft

What I don’t like:
Iron null delay can make you miss good targets
Hardwired headphones
Requires additional kit to hip mount
No tone on deep, faint signals. Just threshold change.
