First Experience with MD

#1 Unread post by Donald52 »

Well(get ready to laugh), the wife and I went and bought our first Metal Detector today. Being Sunday, none of the coin shops or places who sold Whites products were open. Found out that Fryes Electronics sold MD's, computer search showed store availability, drove about 40 miles and purchased a Garrett250. Brought it home to find parts had been reboxed, unit used and put back up for sale on the shelf. What proved useage was the customer who brought it back, left 4-AA's in it.
I know some things come with batteries, but not installed in the unit. Watched the instructional DVD, assembled the unit and headed for the backyard. I know the general area around the garage, that 48-50 yrs ago I buried coins mostly silver 1/2's,1/4's, etc. with a handful of bills (which would be gone now).
I did a test run on some dimes and silver, like the DVD suggested. Then headed for the garage. Right off the reel on the coin setting, sensitivity about half way, it got to chirping. Tried another spot and it showed dimes, 50 cent pieces. had the wife double check me and went for the shovel. Dug one area up, machine showing it 8"+. Dug a footxfootx2' across and put the dirt on a piece of plywood so it could be finely searched. Found one carbon steel, rusty bolt and a small rusty nail.
The machine clearly showed on coin setting with rusty nails checked to be silver. Needless to say, the wife is on her way back to return the MD. Tomorrow, the people selling the Whites coinmaster will be open. It was fun though, and my first experience. Don

P.S.- the unit was not cheap in my books-$240

I guess that might be the reason it was returned. I think you can order a Whites CoinMaster for less online. I was looking at one for $169, plus shipping, would be just under $200.

Whites sometimes runs specials as well where when you buy the detector they will throw in a couple items. Hopes the whites works better for you. If you need help adjusting it just let us know. The coinmasters are pretty similar knobs as my bounty hunter I think.
