1872 Commerative

#1 Unread post by jazzman »

Hi, my name is "jazzman". This is my first posting. I have a coin that is very interesting. On the front is an eagle and under it is spelled"CASSEL 1872". On the back is spelled"ERINNERUNG AN DEN 4. JULY" :ponder: I think this is from a very famous German family that moved to America in the early 1800's and settled somewhere mid country (Illinois?) and either formed the Mennonites or joined them. Any help with my investigation of this coin would be greatly appreciated.

Think this is a memorial token since 'ERINNERUNG AN DEN' translates to "In Memory Of" or "In Remembrance Of". Seems there are several Cassels that were either born or passed in 1872 but couldn't find anything or anyone specific to July 4th.

It looks like a cast copy, but that might be the method used to create this token.

While most of these "in memory of" commemoratives were for a specific death, this one one has the family name. My guess would be they had a 4 Jully 1872 family reunion and one of the memorials of this even was each person received on of these tokens.

Just my old German guess mind you...from my extended family background. (I am first generation US citizen 1970)
