1981-S Flat/Clear S Lincoln Cent

#1 Unread post by Daniel »

I went through many sets and found one. The 81-S proof sets are usually referred to as Flat S mint marks, but they're also Clear. Just clearing up any confusion that might occur over my title.

There's only two for 81-S proofs and that's normal S and a Flat S or Clear S. The SBA Type 2 is referred to as Flat S, but Clear S has been used to refer to the other coins in the proof set.

It's a mint mark variety similar to the 79-S Clear S. When you look at the normal S 81-S mint mark it appears to have a thin peak running along the top, but a flat S has a flat side the top surface.

Here's images of the 1979-S varieties http://coinauctionshelp.com/Susan_B_Anthony_Dollar.html I will post 81-S Flat S images a little later.

Here's a 1981-S Flat S MM SBA. There's really not much difference in the Flat S MM on the 81-S proofs, but they're obviously different than the Type 1.

I thought bumping this would be a good idea since many overlook this variety.
