Warning

#1 Unread post by Isaiah »

Lately SGS/aboncom have been listing quite a few so-called "prooflike" coins on ebay. These coins are far from it. They are hideous improperly cleaned XF coins that make the SGS MS 67-70. They go for huge amounts of money too. Their PL designation is rarely correct. So, if you must buy an aboncom PL coin, check it out carefully.

I would stay completely away from SGS coins. I can't help but feel that the service cares nothing more than about profits and don't care about futhering the reputation of coin grading or TPGS in general.

Here's a perfect example. "This MS 61 PL" sold for $200. It is obviously an XF cleaned. AVOID THIS COMPANY, PLEASE!.

I just don't know what to say. I can't do enough to prevent this type of rip-off. I don't think I ever will, or I will eventually end up in court for trying.

Yes. Unfortunately SGS is doing extremely well at cheating collectors with their inflated grades, and inaccurate designations. I honestly don't know why people believe this company, but they do just that. They have sold many a junk coin at a very high grade price. PL pieces are valued much higher than normal pieces, obviously, and people are hasty to hand over money to the coin in the cheap plastic slab with PL printed on it. It's absoulutely incredible. Again, I cannot stress enough that you should avoid this company at all means possible, even if the coin looks great. SGS uses stock images when selling coins. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

This piece sold for $896.48 and it was slabbed by INB as "MS 67 PL" Very sad indeed.

My website is getting large enough to make a small difference and I'm a top 1000 reviewer on ebay. I have been working on a TPGS guide for ebay, but ebay changed the way guides are displayed and they get less traffic. I even have a TPGS group on ebay with several members, but I can't get them to cross over here.

I need to find a method of getting the news out so I can better prevent this from happening. I will soon put all of my TPGS information onto a completely different website and domain. It will do better then the information does now, as long as it's connected to coinauctionshelp.com.

If these auctions are reported ebay sends them to ANA for evaluation. I got a user band even though this person threatened everyone with lawsuits and was a nasty individual that manipulated their pictures. I proved what they did and it worked out, but now they sell under a different user name and I know this because they use the same photoshop techniques.

Oh well, no rest until I make a dent in this problem.

Congratulations on the 1000 top reviewer status! It is sad what people do. I really believe that anyone who wants to buy anything other than an ACG, PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, or DGS coin should examine it very closely. I seriously doubt that any of those TPGS would TPGS would certify this as MS much less PL. It is sad how much faith people put in these eBay self slabbers. They all (SGS, INB, ANGS etc.) do such a good business because of their flooding of he market on eBay. It's incredible to me. Just don't support these scammers if possible.
