Magnification vs Resolution

#1 Unread post by DSCoins »

In an earlier post I asked Paul about the Magnification he used when taken some photos of a coin he looked at for me. He stated that it was not the Magnification but it was Resolution of the photo. It took me while (long while), to completely under stand what he meant. Although I may have to search with around 30x and a Resolution of 640x480. I have been attempting to get my home care to help with getting my photo stuff down stairs, it seems like something more important always comes up. So I finally decided to look into the setting on my microscope ( duuuhh) :eureka: . Low and be hold I found that I could use 800 x 600, 1280 x 720 and 1600 x 1200. I started just taking photos with the lowest magnification I get my scope to (16x) then taken photos using 1280 x 720 along with 1600 x1200. I finally discovered exactly what he meant (Or at least I think so) with the higher resolution you can crop you photo a heck of lot better and do not get the pixilation issues you do if you took the photos at 640 x480 or even with 800 x 600. So now even though I have to still search around the 30x area when I think I have found some thing I now reduce the Magnification to lowest setting I can, then take the photos at the higher resolution. I would like to search at the higher resolutions but when do, I get a time delay that makes it to frustrating for me. Darn, I hope I got this right finally.

As always I really appreciate all opinions, and enlightenment.

Paul, Unfortunately it is a cheap pluggable 2 USB. I am going to try and save some money to get a higher Megapixel Microscope. I would like to get one with at least 4 to 6 Megapixel.

Thanks

This seems like a good time to ask if there are any limits on the image size here? I've never encountered them here before but thought I'd ask.
(Some sites have limits of 900x900 pixels or other amounts.)

Unless someone has bad eye site or they're a variety specialist mapping die markers for new or die stages and states of varieties, microscopes are more harm than help. If you're really experienced then fine but newbies will just see way too many things that mean very little.

I sometimes have to take the pic off here and put it on my PC where photo software isn't limited as and it seems that I can get better resolution. But it could be just me. But to make overlays and such I have to pull at least one picture off here if comparing pics. But heck it has been so long and my software has changed I may have to go figure all that stuff out again. lol

That it does Paul. Practice, practice, practice. Lots of experimentation in there too, and that is with the equipment one has available. I think with most formats, people can take some good pictures of their coins these days. But lighting is the third part of magnification and resolution. Don't just rely on the phone or camera flash experiment with external light types and angles depending on what you want to emphasize on the coin. Photo'ing BU coins are especially hard with all of the reflections very hard to show split serifs on an rpm for instance. But you said it all practice and I agree but also experiment with your equipment and lighting.
