Fake? 1922 Peace dollar

#1 Unread post by Jsul77798 »

Hi. Never seen this before and it raised red flags. Going though some pieces and noticed a black "spot" on the rev of a 1922 Peace dollar at the end of tail. I magnified it and found it was not foreign matter but the metal itself. Appeared to be a reaction to something over time that resulted in a black area chipping off to a duller area underneath. Being "damaged" at that point I messed with it trying to figure out what was up. The pics are as it is now. In my mind this should not happen.
The coin weighs correct....
Is not magnetic.....
Appears to have other signs of "honest" age.....
Cannot find any obvious signs in the design its not real.....
BUT....i dont know everything......so, Ever see anything like this before?
What would do that to silver?
Thanks gents

The coin is fine just some impurities in the alloy.

Thank you. I have just never run into this before and it really looked like 2 different metals with the top flaking off in that spot. With so many fakes around these days I had to find out more.
Ive noticed that Peace dollars in general dont seem to have as high quality surface as say Morgans do on average or struck as sharply. Were metal impuriteis/planchet qualities and die maintnance an issue with them in general?

The best thing is using VAM world or a known authentic coin to compare and contrast the details. A magnet can't hurt either.
