I picked up the following coin in our sister auction site. I'm not usually into fantasy coins, but the history on the design was just too strong.
In 2002, the Full Step Nickel Club released a 2-coin set of "fantasy" pieces to commemorate the original design submitted by Felix Schlag for the Jefferson nickel. The original reverse design pictures Monticello in a 3/4 view. (And, kind of funny, but do not include the steps to the building.) It was not liked, and so Schlag (with the suggestions of the committee who reviewed the design) provided at least one additional design which was accepted as the Jefferson nickel reverse that we all know well today. The committee also did not like the "art deco" font that Schlag had used -- this was eventually also replaced with a standard serif-type newsprint type font.
The dies for these fantasy pieces were prepared by Ron Landis of the Gallery Mint. He is a brilliant artist, and is especially well known for his amazing Hobo Nickel art. The fantasy pieces were issued in two finishes, MATTE and PROOF, as described on the labels. Each finish was struck in a limited mintage of only 1,938 coins, to commemorate the original year of issue of the first Jefferson nickel.
This is piece number 501 of the Matte finish in .999 Fine Silver.

Re: 1938 Fantasy Nickel
Nice limited edition pick up.
(But the building and lettering looks more like something Warner Brothers and Looney tunes might have come up with.)
