With America today, the cotton gin may be a controversial subject to put on a coin. Curious to see where that one goes.

Are they going to melt all the millions of Presidential Dollars and use that metal? Seems a waste of money to me.

Good point Mark. And thanks for mentioning this. I feel ignorant not realizing the short term effects of the cotton gin on human suffering. (LINK to the side effects of the cotton gin.)
The immediate effects to human suffering were terrible. But in the long run, once slavery was abolished, it has been a good thing IMHO.
This new $1 coin may be controversial but it does put a "spoot"light on American ingenuity. (Like the CWT tie in?)

The Cotton Gin design might be controversial in today's climate but a new dollar series doesn't make sense to me. Why add millions of more dollars to what is already being stored, unwanted and never spent?

I agree with both of you.
It was the lead-in to a great series of innovative tools, but continuing to make dollar coins is pointless.

I am just trying to figure out the government's reasoning on trying these for so long and no one cares. They're still making the Sacagawea but no one wants them, and you don't see them at coin shows except in the bargain bins.
I just got back from a three day show with 125 dealer tables and didn't see any modern dollar coins for sale except some Eisenhowers, unless they were jumbled together in a bargain box.

It does seem to be a waste of money, but they would be breaking the law, as I understand it, if they were NOT produced.
Some member of congress somewhere doing a campaign contributor a favor by having the law passed requiring production?
