1876 IHC Woodie

#1 Unread post by mhonzell » Thu Mar 22, 2018 8:20 pm

While I like anomaly coins, my Woodie is a great example in why grading a coin can be so difficult. If you can see past the light and dark of the improperly annealed surfaces, you will see a coin that is approaching perfection. One small ding on the cheek and an almost imperceptible mark across the '7'. High luster and Red-Brown, this coin lives in one of the older NGC solid holders.

Care to try to grade it?

Thanks Paul... I agree, but NGC did not. Came close.

Just saw this one and was going to say 64 BN. Really nice one with no nicks or dings on the rim.
This is probably a good example of how much importance they place on eye appeal.

(Not to hijack this thread, but I was talking to a friend who has a relative grading for NGC that said that that individual personally graded 4,200 coins at a three day numismatic event a week or two ago. As a bonus they also got to see, in hand, more than a handful of top graded specimens.)

Nice coin but would not have guessed such a high grade.

I know eye appeal plays a part in the grade, but I'm amazed that the grader on this coin looked past the "woodie" coloring and saw the actual surface.
Of course, if I sent it in today, I wonder what it would grade?

PS. Just wanted to point out that a close-up photo does this coin an injustice. Held in hand, you almost cannot see the "woodie" effect on the obverse.
