Red lincoln cents and what pennies?

#1 Unread post by j_a/forever »

I have been up all night going through my penny jug and I sorted out and organized all of the wheat cents and 95% copper etc.etc. but I have quite a number of them I stumbled upon that are pretty interesting but of those some of them are red like, kinda almost looks like a "missing clad layer error" for the cent coin. Any thoughts or comments?

May not be the best of pictures but you can see overall in these three they do not hold the normal browbish copper type color regular cents have. The pictures do not do much justice especially the one with green type crud on it, it is A VERY bright red color.

These coins are not clad, and are only plated starting in 1982 up to the present and the plating is on a gray zinc planchet, these coins were found in the ground. Take it from a metal detector enthusiast.

The coins appear normal for a coin made prior to 1983, but suffer from environmental damage or exposure to the elements. The green is corroding copper (verdigris.) In the middle of 1982, the Mint started plating zinc planchets with copper instead of making fully copper planchets.
