Pearl Harbor medal

#1 Unread post by mhonzell »

Although Pearl Harbor day was yesterday, a comment was made that the US Mint should someday focus on Pearl Harbor with a commemorative coin. I just wanted to let you know that they did.

In 1990, the US Mint made the coin/medal pictured below. They did not sell it to numismatists. It was handed out to veterans.

To have been eligible for the award, "a person must have been a member of the Armed Forces of the United States who was present in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, and who participated in combat operations that day against Japanese military forces attacking Hawaii. A person who was killed or wounded in that attack shall be deemed to have participated in the combat operations." The presentation of the medals was to be as "close as feasible to the fiftieth anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor."

My first re-enlistment ceremony in the Navy was conducted on the Arizona Memorial. I still have the US Flag that flew that day.

The last of these medals were handed out to a man in Tuscon, Arizona on April 5, 2013. He was 91 years old when he was finally recognized. He was a 19 year old Gunner's Mate who was serving on the USS Preble, which was a ship in for overhaul. He helped to put out fires and carry ammunition during the fight to the ship which was tied up next to them while they reassembled their own weaponry. The fight was over before USS Preble could join the fight.
