If it wasn't a zinc coin, I'd say a rusted die.

Pretty severe! Any chance it could be ejection issues? (Variation of ejection doubling.) Speaking of which, when it happens is ejection doubling only on the devices of a coin?

it does not "picture well" being in the slab.....

:eureka:
& getting close enough hugeeyes to snap the "proper angle" to show,....the detailed 'surface',....which appears as "stalagmites", i just can't picture (but i can see it/them)
....as if the "plating was sticky", & as the hammer die withdrew, pulled an itty bit of plating up with it....... :dunno  :dunno

The Mint should be embarrassed to release something like this. That's was part of what I were getting at with the presidents dollar I posted awile back.I know it was a Proof coin that ended up in circulation somehow but it looked to be a poorly struck coin to have been a proof coin Don't know much about this butit does look like the plating tried to pull up off the coins surface ..

Paul, Your images capture the stalagmite effect pretty well. That was what got me to thinking possible ejection issue, the way the top of the bumps had little points to them.

I think it's pretty neet what can be seen, not seen with a little different light, diff. angle, etc. I can see were good, not good pics could really fool an uneducated person bidding on something on E.Bay.. Thanks All.

I did want to say I think it's Great that You Guys are here on this site to help the buyers know what they are trying to buy online and not be taken advantage of. I don't use E Bay but this site has helped me greatly in my collecting abilities. Thanks.

CAM and DCAM (or UCAM) refer specifically to the degree of contrast between the frosted design and the reflectivity of the proof fields. (This is probably another of those subjective "grades".)
Where the proof fields are highly reflective but the design is not frosted or frosted on only one side of the coin, they assign a CAM designation to the coin only.

I believe I have a coin like this wherein it is frosted at one side only. Actually it is a 2014 proof set in a case with other coins. I think the affected coin in the case is the Sacagawea dollar. I will look for it and try to post a picture of it tomorrow. Is there a value for this type of coin?

Usually NGC is the company that uses this term and it's just the field versus cameo contrast. It doesn't add any more value than if it was labeled DCAM.

With proof issue coins both sides need to have the stronger contrast to obtain the higher grade.

Hi all. Could these photos of the Sacagawea be sample of CAM or DCAM as described by mhonzell. There is almost zero contrast between the field and the image. I am posting the whole image of the case (front and back) for better comparison. Even the rim is not frosted. The last photo is what the reverse should look like.
