Toning Silver

#1 Unread post by mhonzell »

On a whim, about one year ago, I placed two 1989 silver dollars on my window sill in the basement. Now, I don't get much sunlight through that window, so these coins did not tone from sunlight. Instead, in the last two months since my basement flooded they have been subjected to the various elements of high humidity and chemical odors used to put down new flooring, paint walls, and general cleaning. Basically, they went from almost white silver to their new state in about two months. (I flipped them over at the one month point.) These were not high quality coins as they have hairlines and were handled by their prior owners kids. So, they were worthy of an experiment.

They have been sitting side by side and turned out completely different from each other.

I have performed the same experiments and its amazing what happens in a short time. Was the ledge wood, concrete or brick?

The ledge is painted wood, but I had them sitting on a piece of felt.

Just an update...
It's about six months later and look how the top one has shaped up.
Maybe I should send it in to stop the process.

I don't know of anything short of a vacuum that would stop this process. Interesting how two coins will tone differently.
