1893 S Morgan

#1 Unread post by conway »

Have run across this raw coin for sale by the widow of an old time collector. Out of everything this is the only coin of note. spent one and one half hours on this coin and am 99% sure it's the real deal. All die marks on the obverse are present, the neck line falls in the correct place, the date numbers rise and fall away to the right and the 3 is higher than the 1,and, the foot of the "R" has the "rabbit ears" and the "T" has the die mark. Also the one is centered correctly. The reverse "S" is centered above the "D" & "O" and there is no lean to the "S".

My self grade would be a VG 8 except for the following, the reverse has been whizzed lightly, if you know what to look for, the marks can be seen in the field to the left and right of the eagle with the naked eye, they show up more under a loupe. aside from the marks the reverse appears to grade a bit better than the obverse but perhaps just one grade.

This coin remains in the hands of its owner, my question would be, if sent in to a grader would the reverse lower the grade one or two points? Knowing this is a key coin, would the grader cut it some slack or be harder on it? Does knowing that the grade affects the price of any coin, what are the odds of a grader acting in either manner.

Not being in the market for this coin I would still like to purchase it but want to be fair to both of us. Any feedback would be welcomed.

Unless the reverse was a several points higher than it will not effect the grade. If the obverse is VG8 and the reverse is F12 then it might get VG10.

I would like to see an image of this coin, I can tell if they're fake or not by just looking at a decent image. If it took you that long to check it out then you're not as certain as you claim on the authenticity.

Please do not buy this coin until you post clear images for us to see.

My I explain, this was the only coin in the collection of note. Met with Mother and daughter and we talked about the collection as a whole and the 1893. Asked and talked about having the coin graded, or leaving in the raw state ect. Didn't time it but would say that using two different powered loupes and the magnifier took 15 to 20 Min. Will ask to see if pictures can be taken as the coin is in their control. Thanks for the feedback as I always trust your judgement. This will be our second set to, our Bank President trusts me and they him so one would think pics are doable. Sorry for not being clear.
