Re: 1857 PHILLY MINT OF FOREIGN COINS?
Act of January 29, 1874 which read:
“Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That it shall be lawful for coinage to be executed at the mints of the United States, for any foreign countries applying for the same, according to the legally prescribed standards and devices of such country, under such regulations as the Secretary of the Treasury may prescribe; and the charge for the same shall be equal to the expense thereof, including labor, materials, and use of machinery, to be fixed by the Director of the Mint, with the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury: Provided, That the manufacture of such coin shall not interfere with the required coinage of the United States.”
The first foreign coinage manufactured by a US Mint was for Venezula in 1875. (The 1 and 2.5 Centavo.)
Prior to this, a coin was made in 1833 for Liberia, but it is now considered a Hard Times Token.
There is "rumor" that some other coins were made between 1833 and 1855, but nothing from 1855 to 1875.

Re: 1857 PHILLY MINT OF FOREIGN COINS?
The Denver and San Francisco mints made silver coins for Australia in the 1940s. It seems a rather odd thing to read since the US mint has made lots of coins for other countries. I'm guessing there is an additional context we're missing, some other intent of the law we're not seeing in this snippet.

Re: 1857 PHILLY MINT OF FOREIGN COINS?
Not sure what you are stating Scubaredneck. There were many foreign coins made by the various mints starting from 1874 to present. (Including the 1940s.) The coins in question were prior to 1874 (the year the law was written.)

So you are still working on the1857 Seated Liberty Quarter multi denomination Puzzler? Sounds intriguing.
So if you are still working on it, can we assume you have made some forward progress.

Did you recently update your PC? That is when my scoping abilities bit the dust. Old scope wasn't compatible with Windows10.

WTG Paul.
It will be real interesting to find out what you have in hand!!!
Sounds like it should grab the attention of some folks that really like wrestling with numismatic puzzlers.

Exactly.
Waiting for your slab it is then. whistling2:
"Pre-congratulations" Paul on the new slabbed major error discovery.
How much of this discovery was possible because of your penchant for early die state coins? You know, before some of the finer details are obliterated by die wear

Re: 1857 PHILLY MINT OF FOREIGN COINS?
I didn't know making foreign coins was such a wide practice. Why do you think that was Mhonzell? Purely economic or was there more behind that?
I definitely prefer Performer 8 over anything else.

Re: 1857 PHILLY MINT OF FOREIGN COINS?
It has an economic basis for the requesting country in that they get high quality coinage or bills without the cost of infrastructure. Many countries do this.
For instance, I routinely purchase coinage from Belarus, but their coinage is produced in either Poland or Kazakhstan.
