It's normal for some to not have a mint mark; it means it was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and is worth face value.

It's the proofs without a mint mark "S" that are worth money.

I don't understand your answer. You say no mintmark is from Philly...but missing "s" is worth something...how is one to know if its missing a P or an S?

A proof coin almost always has an S mint mark, some Silver Eagles don't, but the other coins that come in the sets do. If they don't have an S then they're rare since they're supposed to have the S.

A business strike cent, which is not a proof, doesn't have a mint mark if it is minted in Philadelphia. The exception is 2017, this year they have a P, so if you find a 2017 without a mint mark then it will be a good find.

:eureka:
an easy 'trick' here,.....is to "look up" your coin in a 'price guide'......
these will show all the mints for a particular year........

This may be a rhetorical (and curious) question, but if you saw a 1974-P (no mint mark)laying beside a 1974 (no mint mark) PROOF, would you be able to tell the difference?

Yes, because a 1974-S proof is DCAM and was struck from specially prepared dies. The 1974 without a mint mark in your change is a business strike and is intended for spending without a special finish. The proofs are issued in sets and are not often found in pocket change either.

I provided and image of a 74-S proof and it looks much different than the coin's you find in pocket change.

Can anyone tell me about this penny? I'm trying to find information about the star like emblem on it. Is it worth more than a cent? Thank you.

Welcome Elizabeth.
I'm curious to see the coin you mention. No image was posted with your question though.
If it has a "star like emblem" on it, that emblem would not have been placed on it at the US mint. It is actually considered damage to coin collectors.
