Alright, here's our June contest and there will be 4 prize winners for this one! I have one blank nickel planchet and three copper plated cent planchets. Whoever get's the most answers correct will win the nickel planchet. I will award the three cent planchets based on the next best three answers.
Once you post your answer there's no editing your answer, so may it good the first time.
Okay, these are the questions you must answer.
1. Which of these coins are cleaned?
2. Which is damaged?
3. Which are authentic?
4. Which isn't cleaned?
5. What grading company or companies do you think encapsulated these coins?
The first two images are the prizes.

Re: NEW CONTEST JUNE 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll take a shot since cleaned coins and silver are two of my many weaknesses.
1. Which of these coins are cleaned?
1877 Trade
1871 Seated Liberty 1$
1889cc Morgan
1895o Morgan
2. Which is damaged?
1877 Trade Dollar (Obv. scratches under elbow)
1871 Seated Liberty 1$ (Since cleaned should qualify as damaged)
1889cc (Obv. scratches)
3. Which are authentic? (You are asking so there must be at least one counterfeit/altered)
This is a tough one!
1877s trade dollar ( the "s" appears to be fake/square/smushed))
4. Which isn't cleaned?
1878 Morgan
5. What grading company or companies do you think encapsulated these coins?
NGC (soap bars)?
Boy, you sure know how to make a persons head hurt! :l

Thanks for the contest, Daniel!
Determining cleaned coins from photos is tough! Everyone should take that away from this contest.

Re: NEW CONTEST JUNE 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:agree: It was a great learning experience.
Can anyone tell me what or how the Trade Dollar was Damaged ? I personally thought it was a Fake since so many are. That's why I bought one slabbed ( the one as my Avatar ). speaking of Cleaned, I got most of those wrong also .Anyone willing to explain them ? I guess the grading Company was just a guess ? Or was it ?
Anyway, Thanks so much for the Contest Daniel !
You gave me an Idea for the next Contest .

Re: NEW CONTEST JUNE 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll guess... Probably wrong but I will try. To me it appears that the trade dollar has and old cleaning with a coating added. The others 1871 and 1889 looks to have and old cleaning appearing as having been rubbed in the fields and high points leaving build up next to the devises. The 1895 appears to have been dipped. The 1878 shows cleaning as small scratches seen best in the fields of the obverse and reverse.2centsal wrote::agree: It was a great learning experience.

Re: NEW CONTEST JUNE 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I picked images of coins that didn't look like what the label stated. I may or may not agree with PCGS on these coins but it's near impossible to know what condition a coin is using images. I think I did too good of a job since there's really not a clear-cut winner of this contest.
I am still undecided. So I will do a drawing for all who entered and award the prizes that way. If any of you disagree or can come up with a more fair solution then please let me know before tomorrow evening.

Thanks for a great contest Daniel. It really stretched my eyes and mind. One thing I took away was the need to really read my responses.

Look at top of 95 obverse and top left of 78 reverse. You can just make out the wide PCGS cushions. I assumed they were all one company after that.2centsal wrote: I guess the grading Company was just a guess ? Or was it ?

Thank you Daniel because I know it was a lot of work on your part also. It certainly was an eye opener about the cleaned coins.
It seems like there was a good turnout for this contest.
Daniel, thanks for all your efforts and hard work for everything you do behind the scenes we don't know about.
Hope everyone has a great "4th". :patriot:

Thanks for the awesome contest.
I'd like to see more posts on cleaned coin photos. It's a really tough one to learn with photos. But, there's information to be learned there.
