1783 Washington Set

#1 Unread post by mhonzell »

I've finished this 1783 Washington Set.
Some consider Georgius Triumpho as part of the set, but I don't see the connection other than the date. So, he's not here. There are also a lot of restrikes in later years.

These are categorized by which die pairs were used to make each coin. Vlack is the most comprehensive and accurate attributor in my book (on these coins.)

I have seen the two headed Washington at a friend's house. His looks at least AU. Is it really pricey?

Prices can vary wildly between sellers for these coins and "pricey" is a subjective term based on what you have in discretionary funds.

I establish my "best guess" by going to Heritage Auctions and looking at the coin's Heritage Auction Index. This is usually below NGC or PCGS prices, but represents what it has actually sold for on their auction site. Then, when you go onto eBay and see double that price, it's easier to ignore.

My double-headed coin is XF45 (according to NGC) and they price it at $400. I got it for less than that from a dealer I have bought several coins from and he was willing to lower the price due to prior and continuing business with him.

m, question...
is the 'double header' considered as actual "currency"....??
(with 'one cent', but no 'date')

Good question!

The coin was actually made around 1821 in England and filtered into the US as "protest" money during a period when US was short on pennies. It was used as currency, but is not official US currency.
