Keep in mind that the doubling is on the die from the time it is produced...it doesn't get that way over time although the die may change slightly with wear

I've been pretty busy fishing lately Daniel....I have to devote my coin time over at LCR since I'm a mod,but I try to check in here every now and then. Yeah, post it on LCR as Jason Cuvelier is back from a few days off...he's good on errors.

I'm not so sure this is a dropped letter error Daniel. My reasons are that this could easily happen from contact with another cent...and the fact that the whole word "IN" is there. You might send the pic to Mike Diamond for his opinion.

There is so much deterioration on the die that it would be difficult to determine anything with certainty. But, if you feel confident it is an RPM...send it to an attributer, fees are typically $3-4 per coin plus shipping.

Machine doubling is very common from 1968 thru 1972 and not considered rare by any means.....but there are some collectors of it out there even though most experts consider it worthless damage. My feeling is collect what you like but make sure to label it correctly. This is a nice example but not wha...

Re: 1959 " Black Beauty" Nickel

There are a couple of different theories as to what caused the black coloration. One is that the annealing process was done incorrectly and the other is that there was too much silicon in the alloy mixture. Also there are other years with black beauties...one year I recall being 1958, but 1959 is th...

Re: Die Crack ? Question about Date

Yes, it appears to be a die crack. As for the letters,my theory is that it is caused by a slightly grease filled die because I have noticed it frequently on grease filled die examples where the lettering was still intact.

The mint generally doesn't know how many of a particular error are minted since they were released by mistake. The prices you mention above are not bad, but I would stay away from unslabbed examples in general.

I'll have to disagree on one point Daniel. Die cracks are errors, not varieties. But agree that a progressive run is probably the most sought after, especially if it is pre-cud (rim to rim). Also progressive chips are sometimes a good collector item. Filled mms are usually the result of a broken mm pun...

Re: Die Cracks VS. RPM

That is a big list of questions but I'll answer a few. First, the CPG lists varieties, not errors. Varieties are repeated because they are on the die and stay the same thru the life of the die. Errors can vary and are not always part of the die so they cannot be cataloged or priced as easily as a var...

Incuse would be "sunken" as opposed to "raised".

I guess the important thing to remember here is that a variety is produced by a die. When it has a MM, the placement of that MM will be exactly the same from coin to coin. Yes, there is the possibility of more than one die being produced with an OMM, but in this case, there is only one known die. As ...

Yes, you can send directly to ANACS..but sending to Wexler is the safest bet as these are only bringing around $35 right now. If they make it into the CPG, that would change. Wexler will also attribute the die number which is a plus. Keep in mind that I am not saying this is an RDV-006 so Wexler can...
