It is so congress can pat themselves on the back and say they finally got some legislation passed.
Almost sounds like the the Commemorative half dollar craze of the early to mid 1900's. People got tired of them also.

Re: West Virginia 1972 Penny and Other Finds

Welcome and thank you for the nice images and including an image of the obverse and reverse. The 1956 appears to be an error coin. I believe it was a defective planchet, specifically a large lamination before the strike. A lamination occurs when part of the metal falls off the coin because of defec...

I think the weight helps determine the source of the anomaly by ruling out acid or other caustic substance eating away at the obverse.

I agree but it does appear to have some thickness to LIBERTY (left side of Y appears thicker than the right) and possibly on the date indicative of a doubled die . Can you post images of both sides of the coin and try to reduce the glare (very difficult with shiny ones). Here is the link to doubled...

Re: What is PROOF FLAT FIELD DOUBLING ?

Interesting. A few questions come to mind.
1)?? Why would this be considered an error?
2)Normal MD on a proof isn't considered an error, is it?
3)Is it because it is on a proof coin which is supposed to be free of flaws?
Thanks in advance for the heads up and any insight.

Congrats on the nice find. I was thinking planchet flaw as well.
As deep as that one is I would think something causing a strike through would still be there since they handle the proof coins more carefully than a business strike.

I agree also that it is a wide A M E ....... ( NOT a close AM E ) With a Close AM the two letters would almost be touching and the designers initials (FG) would look different. Another way to differentiate for the Wide AM is if the M looks centered between the A , E so that the distance between all...
