Re: Civil War Tokens
Neat that you found an R over a horizontal R. Wonder if there may have been rust on the master bust die from sitting around creating a cameo effect? Also would they create different dies from separate components? What I mean is, would there be a die for the bust, a separate die for the words or let...

Isn't the ridge under the top of the letters of the motto near the rim caused by die fatigue (old dies)?

Re: Civil War Tokens
Not a rare token at R-2, this PA750E-1a is a little unusual in that the Liberty bust is actually in a cameo state. That's almost unheard of with tokens. To me, this has a couple of other interesting things: 1. Look at the 'R' in BEIRN. 2. Look at the 'H's in PHILADELPHIA. 3. On the reverse, the eng...

Neat medal and evidently some banking history there. Very similar to the Exposititon Medal but not as nicely struck and there are some differences. One in particular is the Area of South America on the map at the top. The tip is pointing to a different are of the clasped hands. I think the OP's med...

There appears to be a fair amount of details on your coin (the darker one?) and it looks like it has the reeding on the edge. Can you post an image of the reverse and weigh it in grams? That will help narrow down the possibilities. Thanks. (ps. sorry I never got back with info on the original post ...

Yours is not copper.
It is a cent minted on a copper plated zinc planchet. Notice the pitting and deterioration.
BTW- a little more details with your question is helpful and appreciated.

In 1983 the Philadelphia mint produced Lincoln cents with no mint mark on them. I believe 2017 is the only year the P mint mark has been placed on a Lincoln cent. It is hard to see from your image but it appears to be "zinc rot". That is where the zinc core under the copper plating has ox...

The main way I can tell is looking at the 2 of the date.
On the small date, the diagonal part coming off the top loop is curved slightly just before reaching the bottom "foot".
The large date is straight in this area.
Hope this helps.

The reverse image, on the rim above the C looks like zinc rot.
I wonder if it is possible for the zinc to have rotted under the copper plating and then the copper plating depressed into the cavity?
