Re: 1825 Farthing

Take a close look at the four 'I's representing George IV. I see doubling in the last two 'I's. In the last 'I', the secondary 'I' is quite a bit off.

1825 Farthing

No, I didn't fall off the coin cart... I've been tied up with work. So, let me take a moment to share one of my coin's with you: In Britain, the production of copper coins had been halted between 1816 and 1821. Britain's Great Recoinage of 1816 ended under the rule of King George IV when, Benedetto ...

Re: Cumberland Gap Quarter Error????

The hardest part of taking the picture is holding the camera still once it is focused. It doesn't take much to blur a blown up coin image. Most cell phones or point and shoots have enough MP for the pic, 3MP is probably the minimum, but it is more important to fill the frame with the coin, if the ca...

Re: 1987 Error Penny - extra metal in die value?

Slight misalignment of the dies is very common and gives that off-center look on the obverse. The filled in letters are known as die chips and also very common. In this coin, those look like bubbles in the clad. The bubbles are due to the poor quality of Lincoln cents made since late 1982. The clad ...

Most of these are die chips.

The "break" between sail and sailor may be a break, but it is kind of fat.
Looks like this die was a bit brittle.

depending on the coin materials (planchet makup), the 'die wear' imparted onto that coin during the strike (for business coins), gives them the 'luster' ("cartwheel or shimmery reflection") we all like to see.... I'm probably misunderstanding, but are you stating that a new die (no wear) ...

Re: 1990 Error? Penny with Acne?

All Lincoln cents since 1982 are clad copper over zinc. Zinc is a very reactive metal and this frequently leads to a separation of the copper and zinc.

In this coin, you are seeing an extreme example of this cladding issue. It is considered post-mint damage (PMD)

First off, dating coins is a rather modern phenomenon. In ancient times, most people knew the subject on the coin and related that to "their" time. Second, maps have changed over the centuries. You said Iran, but if this is old enough, it wasn't Iran, then. Here's examples from Persia: anc...

That would be an unfortunate "ding" where the letter was struck by something: typically either another coin, or a coin counter, that results in displacing the metal of the raised letter and leaving shiny material where the metal once was. Other dings, just leave strange dents in the coin.

This particular die may garner a small premium due to the shattered dies. Especially, if shattered on both sides. Even so, condition matters, as it does with all coins, tokens and medals. With that Daniel is correct... this coin is worth about $25. Other types of errors are quite common and do not a...
