Look at what PCGS is doing to certain coin values

New postby Daniel » Tue Jan 17, 2017 9:42 pm

I have always stated that PCGS is inconsistent and more about the money than actually being the standard. What I didn't know was how bad it had become since the last time I checked into this. My first clue was when Coin World had a piece on the 1997 Lincoln Cent in MS67 that sold for a thousand less than it used to be worth. Reason? Because PCGS graded more since the last time I checked and this date isn't the only example. I assume it could be resubmits of the same grade trying to get a higher [...]

Minnesota Law HF-157 Violates our civil rights??

New postby jesjon » Wed Oct 12, 2016 12:13 pm

I am completely stunned after reading the Minnesota Law "HF-157". It looks like it was written in 1935 Germany. I can understand protecting buyers of anything from unscrupulous predatory sellers but this law goes too far! Every penalty is left open ended for the commissioner to execute as he sees fit. We can even be charged if they believe we "might" be "about" to sell someone a coin with a precious metal content, unbelievable. I know this law has been in effect for [...]

1964 Morgan Dollar Discovered?

New postby Daniel » Tue Aug 30, 2016 6:50 am

Has a 1964 Morgan Dollar been discovered? I am hearing rumors that Q. Bowers and some others discovered a 1964 Morgan Dollar die at the Philadelphia Mint last summer. However, the ad for the newest edition of the Morgan Dollar guide claims this "New Edition of Whitman’s Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars Reveals Previously Unknown 1964 Morgan Dollar"

We have all heard of the 1964 Peace Dollar and it was actually struck and I've seen plenty of fantasy Morgan Dollar dates and counterfe [...]

New postby Daniel » Sun Jul 24, 2016 5:32 pm

If you think you know your counterfeits then you might be about to learn something. I did.

Here's the excerpt from Coin World, original source was ANACS:
"The counterfeit 1906 Coronet gold $5 half eagle illustrated here is a typical gold fake. The quality of this counterfeit is good, but this type of fake is not extremely deceptive once you know what to look for.

While the piece exhibits no obvious patches of tool marks or large repeating depressions on the coin, other diagnostics can be [...]

New postby Daniel » Sun Jul 17, 2016 10:31 pm

U.S. coin production increased for a second straight month in June with United States Mint facilities in Philadelphia and Denver pressing over 1.5 billion coins for circulation, the most since October.

With this year’s string of strong production months, the U.S. Mint is on track to make the second most coins since 2001, having already made more than 8.3 coins through the first half of the year. Overall, coining presses in June struck 1,582,060,000 in cents, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars [...]
