Date – Mint Rarity:

The common date Three Cent Silver value starts at around $25 and key date values begin near $300-$400, but these values are not based on coins that are bent, scratched, cleaned, holed or any other form if damage.

Type I (Small Star):

This series has only one date with a mint mark and that’s a 1851-O (New Orleans Mint) and it’s worth a little more than the rest of the Type 1 dates, but not substantially until EF40 (Extra Fine). In that grade it’s more than double the value of other Type 1 dates that have values close to $200 versus near $85 for the other dates in the EF40 grade.

Type II (Large Star, 3 Outlines):

The 1855 is a better date among this type but not substantially until EF40 and then it’s worth near $225 versus the other dates at $145 in the same grade.

Type III (Large Star, 2 Outlines):

The dates 1863 through 1872 are the better dates but 1859 through 1862 dates are worth around $20 in G4 (Good); the key dates are, and they’re listed here from greatest value to least: 1872, 1870, 1871, 1869, 1868, 1867, 1866, 1865, 1864, 1863 and most of these are extremely close in value starting at $400 in the lowest grades.

Grade – Condition:

It’s extremely difficult to find problem free Three Cent Silver pieces since they’re so small and were often damaged or improperly stored. So the value for MS60 (Mint State) coins jumps dramatically, in example, the 1865 is worth $600 in EF40 (Extremely Fine) but jumps to $1,000 in MS60, and they’re worth thousands in the higher MS grades like MS65.

Varieties:

Look look for Repunched Date (RPD) for 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, then look for Doubled Die Obverse (DDO) for 1852 and an Over Date (OVD)  for 1862. All these varieties will be worth more based on their grade and condition.
