Hi - I have an greetings on the intro thread - but hi to all.

I noticed this as I was cataloging some coins from proof sets. It looks to me like a triple die. I see three layers. I hope the picks look ok and obviously I'd like comments and opinions - and possibly a guesstimate as to relative value. The second in a 1958 PR 1c ddo - I think... Thanks and Cheers - dappadano

It could be a double die or strike doubling, better to be a double die, but it's not common to find proofs like this. It good that you posted as many pictures as you did, it's a help. I would like to see more pictures because light can play tricks on the mirror surfaces of proofs.

I can't really tell if the cent is a DD or not, but the quarter looks like common strike doubling, unfortunately. Good idea looking at those proof sets, though. There are some valuable varieties to be found.

Hi - Thanks for the looks. Here are a few more pics of the quarter. The penny is iffy and I can't get better shots with my camera.

Cheers - Dan

It's possible the quarter is a Double Die or DDO, I think you should visit Ken Potter's website, and send the coin to him, either him or CONECA.

Well, DD is possible, but MD is much more likely. Notice how one series of letters appears to raised above the other letters. Unless this is just a trick of the camera on the shiny proof coin, it cannot be a doubled die. But like I always say, the camera sees something different than we do.

Thanks for the ideas. I had a friend take a look at the quarter and he thinks it's a ddo. I'll probably send it (and others) for a look. I just hate mailing them and not having them - but no reason to worry, is there?

It is absolutely safe if you insure it. I would insure it for the value of a DDO.

I'm going to show your pic to a good friend of mine, he would find this very interesting. He has wrote a few good articles on the subject. I'll let you know what he thinks.

I share similar apprehensions here, as I get queasy thinking about sending valuable coins away.

Where do you live? You may be able to find an expert regionally.

I can assist with picture taking if you wish. Your pics look pretty good. I would need camera make and model info from you, and then can offer some ideas in conjunction with lighting etc...

If you have the 'Cherrypicker's Guide' fourth edition, volume 2 your coin is listed on page 190.

Good find rockdude, and thanks for posting this. I don't have the second in the series, but I will get one.
