The first person to get it correct wins, and the winner will be announced tomorrow, or whenever it's answered correctly. The question has nothing to do with Halloween, but here goes.

Give the nickname or pet names for the following coins:

Half Cents
Matron Head Cents
Morgan Dollars
Three Cents Silvers
Lincoln Cents

Hint: One series above has more than one nickname, and I'm looking for the most popularly accepted nicknames.

The prize will be a PCGS grade 1984 Lincoln Cent MS66 Red.

Very good question and a great learning opportunity. You can bet that I will be writing some of these interesting nicknames down for future reference.

So far, some are correct or partly correct, but no one has them yet. I'm actually looking for names they where called during their time, it's a little more of a historical question.

Morgan Dollar : cartwheel

In my early collecting days, I use to collect Morgan DMPL and PL's. Back then we called all the old large silver dollars by the name of cartwheels. I only collected Morgans, so what the other coins were called, I have no idea.

edited to add: Wheat Backs for the older Lincoln cent.

No other guesses? I will add another PCGS graded MS67 Lincoln Cent, from the 90's for anyone who gets the correct answer.

I'm impressed, but you have left out one common name for a very popular coin. Guess which coin and name and the prizes are yours.

I haven't heard of buzzard dollar for Morgans or thrip for trimes. Good work, everyone. You should add a list of common slang terms for various U.S. coins to the website, Daniel.

Not what I was looking for.

You where so close, and technically correct with your answer, that I shouldn't penalize you for not coming up with one little pet name that I expected. You seem to know the nicknames as good as I, so you're the winner.

I was looking for "Cartwheel" for the Morgan Dollar, but you did get all the nicknames correct, plus some. Congratulations! PM your mailing address and I will send you your coins. Thanks for participating, and please check back because we will have another this week.

That's interesting. I can see why they would say that, because the Morgan reverse is one of the uglier eagles on our coinage.

I hate to disagree, but "cartwheel" is a generic nickname of all silver dollars not just the Morgan.

That is why I left it off.

Actually, I think the term 'cartwheel' is even broader than that. It is used quite often to describe crown-sized world coins and really any large silver coin.

I go with the masses, and didn't want to get into trivial what is and what isn't, and that's why I decided to declare a winner, however, the Morgan Dollar popularized the term Cartwheel, and has been referred to as a cartwheel more often than any other coin in history.

If you type cartwheel silver dollars in a google search, you will see more references calling the Morgan Dollar a cartwheel, than any other coin. So, I stick by my answer, but I thought I was fair on this one.

Since there are no accepted slang words for different coinage series, whoever wins is totally up to whomever runs the contest. Even if that wasn't true, ocon won anyway, so it couldn't have been unfair. That said, why the #@$% didn't I win? :x

You know, looking back on it, you're right. I probably would have had a better chance of winning had I entered.

And as for the other contest, well, you might as well call me William Tecumseh Sherman, because I will not run.

The contract is in the box with all those SGS AG3 Lincolns.

I didn't run the contest this week because of your Halloween contest, but I'll start it next Sunday. Really, I will!

God, I hate knowing all these details about shady companies, but, SGS on slabs coins that are "MS 60" and above. Of course, a cleaned VF is an MS 60, at least, to SGS, but that's another story.
