Welcome to the fourm.
What looks suspicious about this coin? The reverse has some improperly mixed metal, not abnormal for some early cents. Can you see any tiny abraisions around the mint mark?

I guess everything I'm suspicious of, I've seen before...uneven wear..discoloration..U shape of letters on "In God We trust" etc....the big reason I was skeptical is that I paid virtually nothing for it..but it wasn't identified either. And to answer your question, no I don't see any abrasion marks using a 10X loupe (best I have).

All 1909-S VDB Cents where struck with the same mint mark, it's square and box like, and should have a small notch inthe upper serif and a raised dot in the upper loop. According to PCGS Grading Guide.

Looks like the real McCoy to me and the VDB on the back IS off center toward left wheat stalk. I would send it off for grade and authenticate. Even if graded at Good you are looking at the 600 - 800 price range so a little authentication would be good for the soul not to mention if you decide to sell it down the road.

Looks legit to me as well. Could be coincidence especially if only bag/contact marks but searching Google images I saw one tht had similar marking in the same place behind the back base of Lincoln's head. Maybe that's a pup for a 1909-S VDB? Very nice find!

 Re: 1909-s vdb ?
Thanks for the input everybody, I think I will send for grading.I have quite a few good coins that I've picked up at auctions for very little money...I'll have to take some more pics and get your opinions.I've collected almost all my life but never really got serious and learned the finer points...now that I'm retired, there is no excuse not to be educated.
