Major Monroe Dollar Error Coins Confirmed!
Coin World is reporting that the U.S. Mint has accidentally struck between 70,000 and 140,000 Monroe Presidential Dollars on planchets (coin blanks) intended for Statehood Quarters! The error coins were detected and intercepted by the contractor (CoinWrap Inc.,) that wraps the Presidential Dollars for the U.S. Mint. During the coin-wrapping process, CoinWrap workers discovered some "irregular" dollars among Monroe coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint facility. Of course, the contractor immediately Did The Right Thing and gathered all of the misstruck coins and returned them to the U.S. Mint, which will (presumably) destroy them.
The Monroe Presidential Dollar isn't due to hit circulation until February 14, but banks have been able to order the coins from the Fed since the beginning of February. It will be interesting to see how many of these amazing "wrong planchet errors" actually surface, and in what parts of the country they are found. Since we know they're from the Philadelphia Mint, we're most likely looking at locations east of the Mississippi River, generally speaking. The Monroe wrong planchet error coins will be silvery in color, rather than the golden color of normal Presidential Dollars, since they were struck on blanks reportedly meant for Oklahoma State Quarters (according to the Coin World report.) Cherry Picker's Notes:
The year 2007 saw the release of four Presidential Dollars, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In the next few years the US Mint will strike four different presidents, in the order they served, as a dollar coin.
Washington Dollars- Look for no edge lettering. A Denver Mint example has been reported so look at every coin you get. Also, refer to the mint error section of this book for other possible Mint Errors. A special note: Most Presidential Dollars have either the Upside Down Edge Lettering (Type B) and the Normal Edge Lettering (Type A), but is too common to be of much extra value.
Values begin at $1.35 for MS60 and soar into the thousands in MS67 and above. The Missing Edge Lettering examples begin at $70.00 MS60 to $10,000 in MS67.
Adams Dollar- Look for No Edge Lettering, but there have been others like Double Edge Lettering with many varieties of this doubling alone.
Values begin at $1.35 in MS60 to $30.00 in MS66, and not any MS67 examples have been graded by PCGS. So, this would be an area of search for this coin. The Doubled Edge Lettering start at $80.00 and top off at $2,000 in MS66, and the Missing Edge Lettering is most rare because the Mint began better quality control. This fact is reflected in the value of this error which starts at $250 and tops off at $2,250.
Jefferson Dollar-A Partial Edge Lettering has been confirmed and graded by PCGS. A value is not set. Also, Weak Edge Lettering examples have been confirmed.
Madison Dollar-No confirmed reports of Edge Lettering Errors involving the Madison Dollar.
