1871 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-1075, Pollock-1211, Low R.7

The obverse is the posthumous James B. Longacre Indian Princess design, in a starless field with date in exergue. The reverse shows 10 / CENTS, the latter in an upcurving arc, surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Although they were sold in sets from the half dime through dollar, this particular pattern variety is estimated to have less than a dozen survivors, according to both Judd and USPatterns.com.

PR65 Brown $4,887.50 (Jan 6, 2009 HA.com)
1871 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-1076, Pollock-1212, R.8

The obverse is the posthumous James B. Longacre Indian Princess design, in a starless field with date in exergue. The reverse shows 10 / CENTS, the latter in an up-curving arc, surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

The rarity of elemental aluminum--a highly reactive metal usually found in natural alloys--until the late 1880s and early 1890s makes many aluminum patterns, including the present piece, considerably more elusive than their counterparts in silver or copper. The Pollock reference notes that this piece weighs 11.1 grains, with diameter of 0.702 in. and 180-degree die alignment (coin turn).

PR65 $14,950.00 (Jan 6, 2009 HA.com)
1871 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-1080, Pollock-1216, High R.6

The obverse is Longacre's Indian Princess design, here with 13 stars around the rim. On the reverse 10 / CENTS appears, the latter in an upcurving arc, surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Another reuse of the 1870 reverse die on this somewhat available silver variety. Andy Pollock notes that the Lemus Collection example has a die alignment of about 190 degrees, 10 degrees off from normal coin turn.

PR65 $4,312.50 (Jan 6, 2009 HA.com)
1871 10C Ten Cents, Judd-1084, Pollock-1220, Low R.7

The obverse is Longacre's Indian Princess design, here with 13 stars around the rim. The reverse is the regular-issue 1871 dime die. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

A nonsensical--or fantastical is perhaps a better word--pairing of a pattern obverse with a regular-issue reverse, for no other apparent reason than to add more delicacies to the Mint's extensive menu. This issue, like many of the Standard Silver die pairings, is a "stateless" and "godless" variety that omits UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and IN GOD WE TRUST from either side.

PR66 Cameo $13,800.00 (Mar 6, 2008 HA.com) - PR65 $4,887.50 (Jan 6, 2009 HA.com)
1871 10C Ten Cents, Judd-1079, Pollock-1215, High R.7

A figure of Liberty is seated and facing left with 1871 below. She is wearing an Indian headdress and is supporting a liberty pole with her right hand. Her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse is the same design used on production issues. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

Saul Teichman states that three pieces are known, and the pedigrees of each of these were listed in our FUN auction from 2007. Saul also states that a fourth piece may exist and it might be from the legendary Farouk Sale (1954). While this piece is the same grade as the Bass coin that we sold in July 2003, the pedigree markers are different on the two coins. This may, indeed, be the Farouk specimen.
